Surprise! It’s GMO

This was just originally going to be an Eat This, Not That! GMO short-list for my family and I, but then I thought, why not share it with you all? For the complete list, please check out this incredible, original blog post, courtesy of Eat, Local, Grown, which lists the company, their products, and how much money they have contributed to keep GMOs in our food system.

The most important thing about this list is that many labels with the word “organic” in them are backed by these companies. Even though if it is certified organic in the US it is illegal to have GMOs, you still could be supporting these companies and GMO backers by purchasing organic products! Never fear, though, there is a long list of good companies at the end of the original post.

Take Coca Cola, for example:

Coca Cola –  $1,164,400.00

  • Vitamin Water
  • Smart Water
  • Dasani
  • Nestea
  • Minute Maid
  • Honest Tea
  • Odwalla
  • Vitaminenergy

I’ve been known to buy Smart Water when I am really desperate, but now that I know who and what is behind it? No thank you. Life factory water bottle and water fountain, please!

Eat this, not that!

Eden Foods, instead of Hunt’s Organic

Applegate Farms, instead of Hebrew National

Blue Diamond, instead of Horizon milk, Silk products, or Rice Dream

Cal Organics, instead of Muir Glen

Organic Valley, instead of Nature Valley

Zoe’s Granola, instead of Bear Naked

Yogi tea, instead of Tazo tea

Republic of Tea, instead of Celestial Seasonings

Nature’s Path, instead of Cascadian Farm

Clif Bar/Nectar Fruit, instead of Lara Bar

Choice Organic Tea, instead of Sweet Leaf Tea

One of the most disappointing things was that two of my favorite glass bottle carbonated water makes, Perrier and Pellegrino, both trace back to Nestle, which is NOT a company I value. Luckily I have my own Sodastream carbonator, which eliminates single-use bottles and the GMO conundrum.

This is just a shortened list, but I thought the perspective of eat this, not that would give you an idea that there are solutions and switches are easy to implement!

More companies that support GMOs:

  • Spectrum Organics
  • Garden of Eatin’
  • WestSoy
  • Kashi
  • Muslix
  • Nutrigrain
  • Ben & Jerry’s
  • MaraNatha – WOMP WOMP. However the latest nutritional evidence also supports making your own nut butters after properly soaking and dehydrating nuts.

And there are many many more at the original post (I want to make sure credit is given, because it is an incredible resource). However, since I am all about the bright side, here is the FULL list of awesome, sustainable companies! Rest assured, if there is one food you are bummed about missing from the GMO list, there is bound to be an easy switch here.
